The Great British weather can be an unfair beast; planning for a glorious summer wedding is great, but when you book your wedding 18+ months in advance, there is no guarantee the weather is going to play ball.
Don’t bury your head in the sand and hope for the best, instead, plan for the worst. Okay, maybe not the absolute worst, the chance of a tornado crashing your wedding in the north of England is pretty unlikely. But the most common, disruptive weather we get up here is the rain.
First off, DON’T be afraid to get wet, especially later on in the day. Once the formalities of the wedding ceremony are over, the expectation of a pristine bride is gone. Let your photographer and videographer get those amazing shots. It’s our job to capture you in the best light, come rain or shine.
To keep the edge off any rain, pick up some umbrellas, enough for the wedding couple as a minimum, if you want to splash out, consider getting some for the entire wedding party. You might not need them, and hopefully you won’t, but if you do. You will be grateful.
Personally, the best style of umbrella to get is a clear / transparent umbrella with minimal white trim. They are great for letting the light through and not casting shadows when you’re having your portrait taken. Because they are clear, they somewhat disappear into the background and are a lot less distracting. A solid second choice would be a plain white or ivory umbrella.
Pro Tips:
Avoid Patterned or Coloured umbrellas. It might be tempting to find an umbrella that matches your wedding colours, from a photo / video standpoint, they can cast some unflattering colours on your face and dress and the umbrellas can be a distraction in the final photos and videos. All in all, it is best to avoid them.
Don’t skimp out. You don’t need to spend a fortune on umbrellas, but a word of warning, don’t go for the cheapest you can find and be sure to test them before the big day, you don’t want your umbrella catastrophically failing at the worst possible time.
